yoga teachers are almost like parents. they guide you from day one, up until you think you’re ready to go off on your own. and even when that time comes, they’ll always welcome you back.
i’ve come to the realization today that i really need to start practicing yoga on my own. whenever i do, i have a much more successful practice. i can do what feels good to me in that present moment. i can stay in a pose as long as i want to, and i can end my practice when i feel i need to.
books, videos, classes- they are all wonderful things to guide you, and inspire your yoga practice. and that’s the thing- it is YOUR yoga practice after all. my yoga may be different than your yoga. we may have different intentions, different reasons we come to our mats everyday, and that’s okay.
every teacher i’ve come across, learned from, and idolize: tara stiles, sadie nardini, kathryn budig, briohny smyth, heidi kristoffer, etc - they all have their own yoga. tara stresses to find ease in your effort. sadie shows you how your core is connected and activated in every pose. heidi encourages every body to go upside down! they all found something in their lives that has inspired their yoga practice, and that they can share with every body. well, i don’t know what mine is yet. but, i want to find out. i’m going to start practicing on my own every day; and use the lovely yogi’s i’m lucky to have available to guide me, when needed. i really want to look deep inside myself and find what really keeps me coming back to my mat everyday. what is my intention? what do i want my students to take from my classes in the future? how do i want to guide them so they can get the most of their practice?
i suppose there is only one way to find out. :)
